Logic+Emotion has posted a survey on whether digital agencies should blog and it is making rounds on the Internet. The post itself fairly simple, but the discussion (i.e. comment area) is very interesting:

Maka-Maka = Google's Facebook

No comments:
TechCrunh: Google's Response to Facebook: "Maka-Maka" / 2007-10-29

Highlights (SML transcription in semi-SML.SML syntax):
  • Maka-Maka encompasses Google’s grand plan to build a social layer across all of its applications.
  • Google to "out open" Facebook with new APIs for developers to build apps for Orkut, iGoogle and eventually other applications as well.
  • Google new APIs for social network expected announcement = November 8 or 9th
  • Number of partners that have created apps on top of the APIs = 50
  • Of the 24.6 million monthly visitors to Orkut, only 500,000 of those are in the U.S.
  • Google should bring everything (Contacts in Gmail + Feeds in Google Reader + IM buddy list in Gtalk + Events in Google Calendar + Widgets in iGoogle) into a social application without your realization that you just joined another network.

Google search results comparison: Logged in vs Logged out

Google's algorithm appears to be saying

  • When I'm logged in, since i am so active on social networks, my friends' activities matter, and as such the friends history on digg and my LinkedIn profile matters
  • When I'm logged out, people generally search for me when they are looking for information about me, and so the blogs matter more

I'm not quite sure which is which, but I am going to continue to look around. The Google SERP fluctuates so much that it is hard to keep track. Does anyone know if there is a service that do data-mining everyday so I can compare stats?

I have updated my Meta Search Alerts (Yahoo Pipe) on 2007-10-27 to include also news and blogs results:

This Yahoo Pipe does the following:

  1. Aggregates these search results simultaneously:
  2. Filters the results and ensures that the links are unique.
  3. Sorts the results by date such that the latest addition onto the pool will appear at the top of the list.

In other words, it acts as an RSS feed alerts for all these search engines.

Gregory Kirschenbaum - AspireToGreatness.com - 2007.10.23 / SML Fine Art

7 comments:

Yesterday I was having lunch in soho and I passed by an artist named Gregory Kirschenbaum (Google). He uses metal pigment (zinc, copper, iron, bronze) with an array of acid to bring out the natural oxidation on cotton canvas. I did an adhoc video interview with him because I thought that great art ought to be shared:

YouTube: Gregory Kirschenbaum - AspireToGreatness.com - 2007.10.23 / SML Channel

About Gregory Kirschenbaum
Gregory Kirschenbaum (born 1969-09-21) grew up in New York with arts around him. His dad, Daniel Kirschenbaum, is an architect who helped design many New York public projects, including the La Guardia Airport.

Many people from the advertising world often mistaken Gregory to be related to Kirschenbaum Bond & Partners (Google). GK is not related to KBP by blood, but it turns out that KBP is a patron of Gregory. In addition, Gregory has produced some copper on cotton shirts which have been collected by the fashion icon Valentino (Wikipedia).

Collaboration
Gregory is currently collaborating with Andrew Cotton (Google) and will be having an opening on Saturday, 2007-11-03 at the Ward-Nasse Gallery, the only non-profit art gallery in soho New York City. The opening is scheduled to last for an unprecedented nine hours: from 3pm to midnight.

Users: China > US / Google Analytics: SML Gay Blog

No comments:

I just looked at the Google Analytics reports for my gay blog today and I noted that it has more Chinese visitors then any other visitors:

Google Analytics: SML Gay Blog: Visitors: Map Overlay
Google Analytics: SML Gay Blog (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)Google Analytics: SML Gay Blog: Map Overlay (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

This is quite surprising to me as I am more used to the norm of visitor distribution, such as that on this blog—predominantly U.S. audience:

Google Analytics: SML Pro Blog: Visitors: Map Overlay
Google Analytics: SML Pro Blog: Map Overlay (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML) Google Analytics: SML Pro Blog: Map Overlay (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

I am also stunned at the numbers of users reached on that the gay blog--nearly half of that of my professional blog (the one that you are reading).

I generally don't use the map overlay feature because it's fairly useless for my blogs, as I have gotten so used to seeing the dark spot on the U.S., but the experience today really make me think about tailoring my post for my readers, and hopefully improving the quality of the content a bit over there :)

Open Content Alliance = Books + Universal Web Search / Slashdot

No comments:
The Internet Archive, whose main claim to fame is the Wayback Machine, designed to archive the internet's web history, has created a new project: the Open Content Alliance. Its purpose is to open the nation's library collections to universal web search.
A number of major library systems, including the Boston Public Library and Smithsonian, have refused to sign up with competing ventures by Microsoft and Google because they do not provide for universal access to digitized books. These commercial ventures prohibit books being accessed by competing search engines. So far, 80 libraries and research institutions have signed on with Open Content Alliance.
They must pay for the scanning of their books while Google and Microsoft offset that cost for their participating institutions

Facebook SocialAds = Advertising + Social Network Data / AdAge

No comments:

Advertisers and agencies in New York are invited to an event held on 2007-11-06 with Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook executive team as they unveil a "new way of advertising online."

The exact details are not disclosed, but Advertising Age speculates that it may have something to do with "SocialAds", a term which Facebook traemarked on 2007-09-24, which is described as "advertising and information distribution services, namely, providing advertising space via the global computer network [and] promoting the goods and services of others over the internet."

Economist special report: Innovation

No comments:

The Economist published a special report on innovation on the October 13th-19th 2007 issue of the magazine. The report is broken down to seven articles spanning 20 pages and I don't want to distill it too much, so I will break it down to seven posts.

Something new under the sun
Something new under the sun | Economist.com
Innovation, long the preserve of technocratic elites, is becoming more open. This will be good for the world, argues Vijay Vaitheeswaran
Listen to Audio / Buy PDF / Interview with the author

Highlights / Digest

  • "The energy and car industries have not been innovative in many years because they have faced no real crisis, no impetus for change," [Vinod Khosla] inists. (Mr Khosla helped to found Sun Microsystems)
  • Larry Page, co-founder of Google, had earlier hosted a gathering of leading environmentalists, political thinkers and energy experts to help shape an inducement to get things moving: the Automotive x Prize, to be unveiled in early 2008. The organisers will offer at least $10m to whoever comes up with the best "efficient, clean, affordable and sexy" car able to obtain the equivalent of 100 miles-per-gallon using alternative energy.
  • Rapid and disruptive change is now happening across new and old businesses. Innovation, as this report will show is becoming both more accessible and global.
  • North America still leads the world in research spending, but the big labs' advantage over their smaller rivals and the developing world is being eroded by two powerful forces.
    1. Globalisation, especially the rise of China and India as both consumers and, increasingly, suppliers of innovative products and services.
    2. The rapid advance of information technologies, which are spreading far beyond the internet and into older industries such as steel, aerospace and carmaking.
  • One way to arrive at a useful definition [of innovation] is to rule out what innovation is not. It is not invention.
  • New products might be an important part of the process, but they are not the essence of it.
  • Clever ideas have always been everywhere, of course, but companies were often too closed to pick them up. The move to an open approach to innovation is far more promising.
  • "We firmly believe that innovation, not love, makes the world go round," insists John Dryden of the OECD.
  • With manfacturing now barely a fifth of economic activity in rich countries, the "knowledge economy" is becoming more important.

Google Video: Advanced Python or Understanding Python
Google Tech Talks February 21, 2007
Speaker: Thomas Wouters

ABSTRACT

The Python language, while object-oriented, is fundamentally different from both C++ and Java. The dynamic and introspective nature of Python allow for language mechanics unlike that of static languages. This talk aims to enlighten programmers new to Python about these fundamentals, the language mechanics that flow from them and how to effectively put those to use. Among the topics covered are duck-typing, interfaces, descriptors, decorators, metaclasses, reference-counting and the cyclic-garbage collector, the divide between C/C++ data and Python objects and the CPython implementation in general.

This talk is part of the Advanced Topics in Programming Languages series. The goal of this series is to encourage all of the people at Google who know and love programming languages to share their knowledge. If you would like information on upcoming talks, or to schedule a talk of your own, contact information is available on the wiki page.

Harness corporate social networks to spur collaboration / McKinsey Quarterly

No comments:
In McKinsey Quarterly 2007 Number 4, McKinsey research discusses how corporations can better harness the power of information employee networks to spur collaboration and unlock value.

I confess that this article caught by eye originally because it opened with a sentence which supports my blog post on the formation of networks, social or not:
In any professional setting, networks flourish spontaneously: human nature, including mutual self-interest, leads people to share ideas and work together even when no one requires them to do so. As they connect around shared interests and knowledge, they may build networks that can range in size from fewer than a dozen colleagues and acquaintances to hundreds. Research scientists working in related fields, for example, or investment bankers serving clients in the same industry frequently create informal—and often socially based—networks to collaborate.

Article at a glance (quoted from abstract)
  • Most large corporations have dozens if not hundreds of informal networks, in which human nature, including self-interest, leads people to share ideas and collaborate.
  • Informal networks are a powerful source of horizontal collaboration across thick silo walls, but as ad hoc structures their performance depends on serendipity and they can’t be managed.
  • By creating formal networks, companies can harness the advantages of informal ones and give management much more control over networking across the organization.
  • The steps needed to formalize a network include giving it a “leader,” focusing interactions in it on specific topics, and building an infrastructure that stimulates the ongoing exchange of ideas.

Harnessing the power of informal employee networks
Formalizing a company’s ad hoc peer groups can spur collaboration and unlock value.

Interaction design need not involve computers / Jake Barton / Local Projects

No comments:
I went to the Apple store in Soho yesterday with Trevor MacDermid (Google / LinkedIn / SML Wiki) to see Design Remixed: Jake Barton, an event organized by AIGA New York.

Jake is the founder and principal of Local Projects, an award-winning design studio that seeks to tell stories in public spaces, museums, and over the internet, often simultaneously.

Jake showed a project that I thought was particularly interesting. It's called Memory Map:

It is an environmental design project where the content is entirely user-generated. UGC is a commonplace in the age of Web 2.0, but what is special about this project is that it does not involve technology at all.

In a gist, the installation involves a New York City map, on which visitors of this Smithsonian exhibit share personal stories by anchoring hand-written notes to specific locations related to their memories. Much like the same phenomena witnessed on social networking sites, small clusters of conversations emerge on the map. People felt a sense of connection through these notes, and it is through these memories where the diversity of the city can be felt on this cultural ecosystem.

During the Q+A session which follows the presentation, Jake further emphasized his desire to not involve the use of touch-screens for his museum installations which he felt appear more like ATM machines and thus remove the emotional impact of a stories as told by human beings.

Additional interesting projects presented
  • StoryCorps. A nationwide initiative to instruct and inspire citizens to record each other's stories in high-quality audio. Participants receive a CD of their recorded interviews while a copy goes to the Library of Congress for a national oral history archive.
  • P.I.E. (The Public Information Exchange). A hybrid digital/physical interface designed to create an archive of the NYC projects, proposals, programs, and exhibitions presented or discussed at the Center for Architecture.
  • Timescapes. Said The New Yorker: "Four hundred years of New York History are compressed into a twenty-two minute presentation morphing maps, images, and narration in the new three-screen installation 'Timescapes,' at the Museum of the City of New York. It's an absorbing biography of the city, neatly organized into chapters that outline the city's explosion out into its five boroughs, up into the skyscrapers, and down into the subway system."

Google = How I get to know my family

3 comments:

About half a year ago, I started having lunch with a different person at work everyday. The conversation is always interesting. And it is from these conversations that I realize just how diverse people really are—their interests span across multiple disciplines—which is not immediately readily apparent just by looking at their resumes on LinkedIn.

Another thing that I took note, however, is how well people know about their family. All of them are able to tell me exactly what their parents and siblings do for a living. I envy them, because I could not.

When I was growing up, about the only thing that I know about what my dad does professionally is that he teaches marketing at a university, but that's about it.

The other things that I know about my dad come from daily observance:

  • We subscribe to ten newspapers which he skims through every morning.
  • He also asks me to use the microwave stuff for him because he is immensely afraid of the microwave, after witnessing the scary details of the first-generation microwaves in America in the 70s when he was studying for his PhD.
  • I also know that my dad likes books, because aside from having a books-filled study *and* library, the bookshelves creep all the way out to the dining room and continued to fill out every single wall where a bookshelf can be installed.

My knowledge of my family expanded significantly, however, when Google started indexing data:

After getting much satisfaction from Googling my dad, I moved onto my sister:
  • Because of Google, I noted that she has she is not as searchable as my dad
  • Because of Google, I noted that the second search results that comes up (like many of my friends' SERP) is on the SML Universe property.
  • Because of Google, I noted that she was the first person in my family to make it onto the Google Patents Search
  • Because of Google, I also noted that one of my medical illustration was published on Nature but my sister has apparently neglected to give me credits, thus ruining the main reason why I decided to help her out at the first place: getting my name published on a respected scientific journal.

Since day one of my SML Family Google Research, the number of search results generated has always been on the order of 1. my dad, 2. my sister, 3. me and my mom, no where to be found. I also noted that no matter what I do, I only get double-digit results.

That all changed this year. Finally, I have done something that made SML Family history. Starting in 2007, the SML Family Google ranking will have been officially repositioned to 1. Me, 2. Dad, 3. Sister. Eat that!

This is of historical importance to me, since I have never been able to beat my sister in any other field other than piano, which no one cares about anyway. With the growth in the amount of data, search engines will continue to have significance in our everyday life, and as such, I am content.

Vanity aside and most important of all, is that because of Google, I can now talk about my family as though I really know them.

For a brief moment, I felt the peace of not having to stand out too much from the crowd.

Adsense as Blog Analytics Tool / 2007 / SML Ideas

Adsense as Blog Analytics Tool / 2007 / SML Ideas (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

Aside from generating petty change every month, Google Adsense can also serve as an ambient device for you to figure out how well your blog posts are without jumping into Google Analytics.

I use the 728x90 Adsense units on my professional blog, and I noted that:

  • When I first installed it, it had four random text ads on it.
  • Then I wrote a good blog post, and the four ad units turned into three text units
  • Then the spot hosts two ads
  • Until finally it turns into one giant ad.

When it turns into a single ad, I noted that:

  • The first time it turned into a single 728x90 banner, it's usually an Ameriprise ad
  • Then I'd start getting Circuit City ads
  • And then I'd get Yahoo ads (as seen above)
  • Until finally I get Google ads!

And when my blog posts aren't that great, it will start to dwindle back to 2-4 ads... when eventually it might even get to public service ads, which, thankfully never happens anymore. :)

The Gel Dilemma / Rands in Repose

No comments:

Hyper-geek Rands Pantalones (Google) reviewed six pens:

  1. Pilot G-2
  2. PenTel Energel
  3. Pentel Hybrid Gel Roller
  4. Uni-ball Signo
  5. Pentel Hybrid Gel Grip
  6. Pilot V-Ball Grip

for three tests

  1. The Glamour Test. How does it look? How does the pen feel in my hand, and, more importantly, can I spin it around my thumb?
  2. The Line Test. How does the ink flow? The basic straight line.
  3. The Writing Test. This test brings it all together. How does my writing look? Is the pen helping or hurting?

My favorite used to be Uniball but it was replaced by Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Superfine this year, which unfortunately was not reviewed.

See the hilarious yet informative full review at:
Rands in Repose: The Gel Dilemma

Other Rands in Repose blog posts that I recommend:

  • N.A.D.D. (Nerd Attention Deficit Disorder): because it reaffirms the importance of data-indexing
  • More Messy Thinking: because it's great to know that I'm not the only one in the world orienting monitors vertically

Get more from less / McKinsey Quarterly

No comments:
In McKinsey Quarterly 2007 Number 3, Stephen Corbett, a principal at McKinsey's Toronto office, discusses the challenges of adopting the lean production approach in nonindustrial environments and shows four examples of how managers met these challenges in a variety of operating contexts.

Contexts
  1. Applying lean production to the public sector: Governments at all levels must deliver more for less. The principles of lean manufacturing offer surprisingly apt solutions.
  2. Applying lean to application development and maintenance: To make application development and maintenance more productive, IT managers are getting lean.
  3. Better manufacturing in China: An interview with two of PLP's top executives: Bill Haag and Wu Yu explain the lessons of a lean transformation at the Chinese factory of a manufacturer based in Cleveland.
  4. Toward a leaner finance department: Borrowing key principles from lean manufacturing can help the finance function to eliminate waste.

Key points from example 2: Applying lean to application development and maintenance
  • The McKinsey study shows that applying the principles of lean manufacturing to ADM (Application development and maintenance) can increase its productivity by 20 to 40 percent.
  • Transforming ADM begins with a diagnostic phase to find waste.
  • A large financial institution going through the diagnostics discovered two main causes of waste:
    1. The process for defining project requirements was chaotic and inefficient. IT had no standard way to get a comprehensive description of the requirements for maintenance requests, so developers had to keep asking questions to clarify them, which led to delays and rework.
    2. There was also no clear way to prioritize projects. As businesses requested exceptions and rush jobs, developers shifted focus from one application to another, and some projects were never finished.
  • After the diagnostic phase, IT managers launched a pilot program focused on three lean principles:
    1. Improving the work flow. To make the work flow smoother, the managers scheduled bimonthly software releases, with clearly defined steps and a capacity based on the available resources (designers, coders, and testers). this predictable schedule allowed the business to plan for current and future releases and diminished the tendency to rush late requests into the process.
    2. Balancing workloads. To even out the workload, the managers defined work groups more flexibly. Developers and testers were cross-trained to work on projects throughout the organization. Managers could now deploy people more efficiently; when one group was busy, it could borrow developers or testers from another.
    3. Managing performance. A "dashboard" was created so that problems could be recognized early. In one case, managers saw that a task was taking longer than estimated and therefore redistributed the developer's workload to minimize the disruption. The decision to track the performance of individuals encouraged developers to take on additional tasks, since their efforts were now more visible
  • The pilot surpassed expectations, boosting productivity in the targeted application maintenance areas by 40 percent in less than two months. IT's business counterparts were more satisfied with the process, and employee morale reportedly rose.
  • As a result of this success, the company rolled out the effort to the rest of the application maintenance organization to other parts of IT.

Mojiti = UGC on UGC

No comments:

Mojiti allows users personalize any videos online with annotation in text, audio, or even video on top of the original video!

Here's a demo of it in action (Mojiti: Sony Bravia)

It has certainly taken user-generated content to the next level--it's UGC on top of UGC. Pretty cool!

Gender Behavior Differences on Social Networks / Advertising Age

No comments:

Advertising Age recently did its annual survey on college students and found that there is a significant split in social-networking activities between sexes.

Gender behavior split on social networks
Stylistic edits are mine

  • Facebook ranked as the most popular website among the 18-to-24 set
  • Social networking was twice as popular with young women as young men
  • MySpace, which was No. 1 last year, ranked No. 2 with females but dropped out of the top five for young men
  • That means marketers using social-networking sites to target young people are reaching far more females than males
  • Men are far more likely to use social-networking sites for business purposes such as LinkedIn
Male college students + UGC / Community
  • While their tech savvy showed, particualrly among men who ranked Digg and Engadget among their top 10 websites, they didn't make the leap to consumer-generated media.
  • Only 8% said they had uploaded videos to YouTube
  • 64% don't make videos at all
  • 14% don't share them with anyone
  • 75% surf social-networking sites
  • 71% read news online
  • Only 14% write blogs

See-ming Lee / SML Skydive / 2007-10-13

No comments:

SML Channel presents...
An SML Life production...
See-ming Lee - SML Skydive 2007.10.13 - Crazy Again!

I had so much fun last time that I decided to go back Skydive the Ranch for seconds (T2: Tandem 2)

I went with Adam S. Kirschner (Blog / YouTube) and his college buddie Brad for this round of crazy stunt.

Colin Sutherland could not make it because it was CME's birthday on Sunday. Eduardo F. Ortiz just jumped last week so he was not here either.

I am happy that my first video had generated enough buzz that has convinced Adam to come and he clearly had fun as well. See his video at YouTube: HiKirsch: Adam S. Kirschner - Skydiver

Last time was awesome, but this time I truly felt it. I still freaked a little when I jumped out of the plane, but it was all exciting shortly after... and for the first time around, I actually did enjoy the view very much.

Skydiving... highly recommended!

SML Skydive video remix

Two months have passed and I still have not had the chance to remix my first video, but with these new footage shot by Laszlo Andacs, I should have enough materials to create my upcoming dance track, Crazy is Good. Stay tuned. For more SML Music, visit smlMusic.com.

SML Thank You

Adam S. Kirschner: I would like to thank Adam S. Kirschner for inviting me to go with him on his first skydive! I love people who can work hard and play hard, and as I mentioned in my previous blog post, those are exactly the kind of quality I seek to work with. I am impressed, and I am really glad that Adam had a great time also. I Love ASK! Kudos!

Beth Schuman: I would like to thank Beth Schuman for jumpsuit wardrobe assistance. Beth had her first skydive the same day and I am very honored to be her witness as she signed away her life to her tandem instructor.

Brad Schwatz: I would like to thank Brad Schwatz for skydiving with us. I am also really glad that I have successfully convinced him to throw close to three hundred bucks to get a video on his first skydive. Brad is a shoe designer, and definitely has an eye for shoes. Fashion fashionistas warning: you have approximately five years to scoop him up before I am ready to build my fashion collection.

Denes Gutai: I would like to thank Denes Gutai for being my T2 skydive instructor. Denes is also the U.S. exclusive distributor for Intrudair, a line of quality jumpsuit products from Hungary. I checked out the site last night and those pants are hot! I also find the logo design of Intrudair to be really inspiring. Go check it out at intrudair.hu!

Jeff Daniels: I would like to thank Jeff Daniels for skydiving with Brad.

Laszlo Andacs: I would like to thank Lazslo Andacs for shooting and editing the wonderful video above. Originally I was expecting this video to be similar to the first one shot by Oren Peri, as such I am very impressed to see the diversity in creativity in not just how the same subject can be explored, but also in terms of style and perspective. Very well done!

If you are interested in freefall videography, digital imaging and computer editing by this professional skydiver stunt cameraman, check out his website at laszloimage.com.

Marcos (SML Data: last name data unavailable): thank you for being Adam's T1 skydive instructor.
