On September 11th, 2009, Smashing Magazine posted of blog post about Data Visualization and Infographics Resources. The map that I created in college intended to help freshmen navigating around New Haven when I was the photo editor / design editor at The Yale Herald back in 1997 was featured:

I love data and I enjoy seeing things that are inspiring and original, and most definitely enjoy seeing someone who appears to share the same belief that great things ought to be shared with the world. It is my belief that the human race will progress a whole lot smoother if knowledge, awareness and education are better spread throughout the universe.

I am delighted to find someone who shares my believes.

Tom, thank you.

I lost everything after Miguel Hernandez' farewell drinks. Then last Monday, a woman named Lori Casey called me and let me know that she has found it inside a cab. I was ecstatic! She has done such amazing thing and the first thing she said on the phone was that she was sorry that she did not call me earlier.

I am constantly amazed at the amazing things people are doing everyday—which is precisely the reason why I have a blog devoted just for thank you notes (thankyou.seeminglee.com)

Here’s a photo of every single gadgets uncovered in that bag, not a penny was lost:

I would like to thank Karen Ngai + Miguel Hernandez for taking photos with me at Miguel's drinks. And of course, Lauren Shea for taking the photograph.

Moms

2 comments:
Like many people, I love the Simpsons. Seriously. I have seasons 2 - 11 on VHS tape because my mother said when I was in 7th grade, “You should tape the episodes if you like the show because its going to be canceled any day now.” That statement was made in the year 1990. In case you don’t have a calendar, 17 years have passed.—Jeff Lipson (LinkedIn) / SIMPSONS SIMPSONS SIMPSONS! / We’re Going To Cover That In Phase 2

It’s amazing what our moms can make us do.

SML + Programming

When I was 7, I wanted to play computer games. My mom said, “Well, if you want to play computer games, you should go write my own.” So I did.

What I learned from these game writing is that I have no interest in those games—but the process of trying to solve the problems encountered during programming was great fun.

SML + DOS

When I was 10, I wanted to play with the 286 my dad bought. My mom said, “If you want to use the computer, you need to read all the manuals before you touch the computer.”

Well, the manuals that shipped with the computer happened to be the MS-DOS user guide and MS-DOS reference. I read both manuals cover to cover and til this day I still know the DOS prompts by heart.

SML + Word Processor

After I got my hands onto the PC, my dad bought Wordstar and I wanted to play with it. My mom said, “Well, you don’t need Wordstar, what do you need it for?” I don’t even know what kind of features it had and I said, I guess, just word-processing. My mom said, well, you can write that, right? So 5,000 lines of BASIC code later, I had my own word-processor. Ugh.

SML + Research + Design Production

When I was 14, I wanted to play Monopoly (Wikipedia: Monopoly), but my mom thinks that it’s not an ‘educational’ board game and refuse to buy it for me. She said, “If you want to play Monopoly, you should make it yourself.”

My mom took me to the library and I found a reference for Monopoly, which details every game piece and cards which come with the game. It also provided extended rules and tips on game play.

I read that cover to cover and studied all the rules. Before embarking on my Monopoly factory production, I made sure my sister would at least play that set with me for ten times. I spent the next two weeks using color pencils and created the board, all the cards. My sister only played that with me once. :(

SML + Model Boats

When I was I don’t recall what age, I wanted to get one of those wooden model boats I saw at the hisory museums. My mom told me to build one from wood myself because they didn’t get it from the store either. I never crafted my model boat out of wood. And as I learned from architecture classes in college, it’s not all that easy.

I still haven’t crafted any model boats, but I am seriously thinking about it.

SML + Creativity

I hated my mom back then, but I love my mom now because she has put me in the seat of creation every time there’s a problem. I also learned that it is the process—not the end results—that matter most. The power of this philosophy has made me who I am today.

SML Thank You

Mom, thank you.

“Light is the metaphor for hope and knowledge,” says Gregg Fisher, vice president of Health and Life Science Practice at IconNicholson.

So it only seems appropriate that the firm developed an interactive candle-lighting experience for the 2006 Light to Unite website. This annual campaign from Bristol-Myers Squibb raises awareness as well as funds for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention in the U.S.

“When people start to think about AIDS, they often think about Africa,” says See-ming Lee, art director and senior interface engineer. “It’s still a very serious disease in the United States.”

This fact was reinforced as soon as visitors logged onto the site. During the roughly seven-week campaign, which started on World AIDS Day, users found themselves facing an unlit candle against a dark background, with only a lit match to help them navigate the screen. As they moved the flame around, they illuminated startling statistics about HIV’s spread in the U.S., and these facts all became visible once users lit their candles. For every person who completed this simple act, Bristol-Myers Squibb donated $1 (up to $100,000) to the National AIDS Fund. Site visitors could also give additional funds.

Fisher says the project is a great example of what happens when you give power over to community and let it take control. The majority of the site’s traffic came from people who found out about the effort through word-of-mouth online—not paid media. this becomes all the more impressive when you realize that more than 1.8 million candles where lit during this relatively brief effort. And through the first week of January 2007, more than 8000 people signed up for the site’s newsletter—and there were more than 200,000 requests to send the site to a friend. “It's taken on a life of its own,” Fisher says. “Light to Unite is spreading life, spreading awareness, spreading knowledge.”

After lighting a candle, visitors could learn more about the personal impact of HIV/AIDS through the site’s user-generated stories. These short, emotional snippets were submitted through last year’s Light to Unite site, an they’re each represented by a burning candle. “We spent two weeks trying to animate a candle to make it look real,” Lee says. “Every single flame is animated differently.” This attention to detail heightens the experience as you navigate through individual stories or explore them by broad themes ranging from courage and fear to family—and the stories are still accessible now that the campaign as concluded.

SML Notes + SML Tech Talk

  • The inspiration for associating candles with the story came from Hillary Savage (LinkedIn), who suggested that behind every candles is a story worth telling during our brainstorming session.

  • The inspiration behind the using highlighted words (aka tags) to get to different collection of stories came from my avid tagging behavior on Del.icio.us. I felt that users ought to be able to tag the stories themselves, as different people will interpret the stories differently. However, due to legal contraints—it is pharma afterall—we compromised to pre-tag the content.

  • The candle flash animation are individually generated using Flash 8's BitmapData.perlinNoise method to alter a 5k PNG. Writing this class was the most satisfying accomplishment thus far—most of my friends thought that they are videos.
