Search Engine Masturbation = Google Search + Live Search + Yahoo Search + RSS

Concept
Instead of daily vanity/ego search, create a Yahoo Pipe to search simultaneously using Google, Live and Yahoo and turn them into an RSS feed. In other words, instead of turning yourself into a bot to monitor the bots' activities, spend your time to create relevant content be indexed instead!

More sex is safer sex / Steven Landsburg

No comments:
Source: Possible Side Effects / 2007-07-08 / New York Times

Steven E. Landsburg (Google), a professor at the University of Rochester recently published a book called More Sex is Safer Sex: The Unconventional Wisdom of Economics, where he applied economics theory in everyday life. The book is largely based on his column called Everyday Economics on Slate Magazine.

I haven't read the book yet, but it looks quite interesting based on the book review on New York Times, where he suggests that the AIDS epidemic is "the price of our permissive attitudes toward monogamy, chastity, and other forms of extreme sexual conservatism."

You can also read the first chapter of the book on New York Times' Web site.

SML AIDS = non-profit HIV/AIDS information portal

No comments:

I created a site called SML AIDS (http://smlaids.org) last Sunday using Google Apps to feed news and resources that I found related to HIV/AIDS on the Internet, in hopes to bring awareness to the significance of the issue, and provide as a source for news, research, studies for those who are concerned with this disease.

Earlier this year, through my various studies on network theory, I discovered many discoveries relating to HIV/AIDS that may not be immediately apparent.

Although I am negative, many of my friends are positive. While I am technically savvy and have the know-how to fetch information easily, many of my friends may not be. And I wish to do the do the best I can to give back to the community who has always been there to provide me with support when I needed them most.

If you have any suggestion and feedback, please do not hesitate to contact me at seeminglee+smlaids@gmail.com.

Google search results = my online personal ad

No comments:
Ok, I can see that you are very searchable. So what?
— via IM

When I googled myself a few years ago, I had less than a page of links. When I googled myself half a year ago, I had at most 30 pages of links. Now, when I google myself, I have about 50,000+ links. What's the purpose of all this?

One purpose, I say, is that it functions as my online personal ad. Why bother writing all those lengthy paragraphs of descriptions, interests and what I like or don't like when what people really want to do is get your name and Google it themselves anyhow?

So there: Google SERP = my online personal ad.

Scoop up everything related to me in words, images, videos, blog posts then email me at seeminglee+love@gmail.com if you're interested.

To make this easier to forward to your friends, just send them my tiny url: GoogleSML.com

Cheers,
See-ming

Focus vs Unfocus

No comments:

Some people say that my professional blog is very focus. Actually, it's not. It's very unfocus. It focuses on being unfocus.

Pattern Recognition = Key to Fight (HIV + Spam)

No comments:
Using Spam Blockers To Target HIV, Too / Info Tech / 2007-10-01 / Business Week
Source: Business Week: 2007-10-01: print edition. pp.68, 70

David Heckerman (Google), a physician as well as a PhD in computer science at Microsoft Research, was doing research on better spam-blocking when he noted that those same technology can be applied to blocking HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS.

From Heckerman’s perspective, HIV is like a cagey spammer. After attacking a cell, it injects its own genetic material and proceeds (much like a spam jockey who has commandeered as an unprotected computer) to manufacture thousands of copies of the virus.
The trouble? Complexity and mutations. HIV-infected cells often wear mutated nameplates that immune systems haven’t learned to read. In this sense, vaccines have been like faulty spam filters, the ones that block e-mails promoting “Viagra” while letter ads for “V1agra” scoot through.
But Heckerman is upbeat. He argues that by revving up the computing power and blending thousands of new variable, researchers are making progress. One key, he says, is to map the patterns of mutation and incorporate them into medicine. These mutations, he says, appear to vary according to a person’s immune system. If researchers can find the patterns, they’ll be closer to making effective vaccines. Yet if they conclude that the mutations are utterly random, then “we’re in big trouble,” says Heckerman.

Torrent, like data, information, website, etc. is a modifier and as such should probably not be used. Focus on the subject, which, in this case, should be Reason 4. In other words, make sets out of your queries for (reason 4)* instead.

Jen+Peter Wedding 360: Identity: Logo as Chinese Seal / 2005 / SML

No comments:
SML Flickr: Jen+Peter Wedding 360: Identity: Logo as Chinese Seal / 2005 / SML

Wedding 360 / SML Projects (Set)
Wedding Invitations for the wedding of Jen Chen + Peter Evans.

Concept
The Jen + Peter logo reversed out and created as a traditional Chinese seal (stamp / chop). The seal is used to add a personal touch to all the thank you notes.

To save cost, we utilized commercial rubber stamp companies. The stamps are not perfect, but the imperfection actually adds value to the individually written stationary. Guests felt extra special when things are not prepackaged. Total cost for production: 34 dollars including shipping.

Wedding Identity / Logo
Double Happiness reinterpreted using lines and geometric shapes. Graphically, the traditional symbol for wedding literally unite the first names of the woman and the man.

The logo also draws inpsiration from the icons for the male and female symbols. This influence is much more apparent when you flip the logo.

Wedding 360 / SML Projects (Set)
Wedding Invitations for the wedding of Jen Chen + Peter Evans.

Concept
Save-the-Date as a literal act of making a mark on a calendar. To save cost, designs were printed on Avery circular labels using on a Fiery printer (color laser jet).

Typography
Helvetica (Masculine / Modern / Yin) combined with BickhamScriptPro (Feminine / Traditional / Yang) to create a united synergy of harmony.

For the engagement party sticker, the type flows spirally from outside to the center, suggesting two person coming together and join on one day. For the wedding save-the-date sticker, the type spirals out from the center to suggest the date where they start to expand the lives together for eternity.

Design Interact: Web Site of the Week (www.designinteract.com/sow/122004/)

Week of December 20: Project Rebirth Web Site

Project Rebirth is an online chronicle of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. As immediate and compelling as a physical visit, this project gives people the opportunity to observe and share in the progress of the reconstruction.

Newly released at the time the team was considering technical specifications, thisProject Rebirth Web site site uses the FlashMX development environment to full effect. Functioning as a portal to extensive content, the beauty of this Web site lies in its ability to be current and historical. With a visual design that appropriately takes a back seat to the content, it records ideas, images and interviews in their original context while also allowing for their evolution.

Primary content consists of a series of video images (presented in a timeline format) captured by six, 35mm time-lapse cameras positioned by Project Rebirth around the World Trade Center site. They shoot one frame every five minutes—and will continue to do so for ten years. The images enable the viewing of the rebuild as it occurs on any date; in seconds, visitors can see the footage of a single day. There are also interviews with reconstruction overseers, journals by filmmakers and video of major milestones in the redevelopment efforts.

Project Rebirth Web siteThe key challenge for the developers was to create an interface that would incorporate what would ultimately be ten years of film footage, that didn’t inundate visitors and yet communicated the passage of substantial amounts of time. Their solution is an interactive, XML-driven timeline that delivers fluid viewing of time-lapse footage. It provides an appropriate time-based metaphor that also does a nice job of integrating video, audio, imagery and text-based content into a single interface. The time-based experience allows access to any moment in time and provides the ability to navigate the Web site by date and/or event. Our one complaint: The link from the home page, to this main feature, looks far too much like header art. We would have liked to see billing more in line with its importance.

This collaborative effort between Project Rebirth and IconNicholson began in the summer of 2003 and the site launched in September 2004. On average, visitors are staying on the site 19 minutes, which is significant in comparison to Internet-wide stays at sites with similar content. Interestingly, international users comprise 30% of all visitors.
