Arthur’s Landing

1 comment:

Arthur’s Landing is a group of musicians, all of whom worked at various times in various contexts with the late Arthur Russell (Wikipedia), a cellist and composer from Iowa who lived on the Lower East Side for most of the later part of his too-short life.

I don’t know Russell in person, but I came to enjoy his music via Steven Hall.

Born Charles Arthur Russell, Jr. (May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992), Arthur Russell found the most success in dance music. Russell’s career bridged New York’s downtown, rock, and dance music scenes; his collaborators ranged from Philip Glass to David Byrne to Nicky Siano. Relatively unknown during his lifetime, a series of reissues and compilations have raised his profile in the 2000s.

The band members of Arthur’s Landing are:

  • Steven Hall: guitar / vox
  • Bill Ruyle: drums / hammer dulcimer / tablas
  • Peter Zummo: horns / vox
  • Joyce Bowden: guitar / clarinet / vox
  • Ernie Brooks: bass / vox
  • Mustafa Ahmed: perc

Musicians who play with the band on occasion include: John Scherman, Elodie Lauten, Peter Gordon, Max Gordon, Michael Evans, Carlos Hernandez, Zach Layon and Alex Waterman.

You can listen to their music at on their MySpace page. Various videos of the band are also uploaded on YouTube. Their music is licensed by Moon Caravan Records.

I went to see Arthur's Landing at Zebulon in Williamsburg last week, in conjunction with a Chinatown Records party hosted by Brennan Green. Here are some photographs taken that day:

I had problems keeping track of all the topics discussed on my Moleskine, and so it was wonderful that Paul sent notes, links and references back to me as an email as we speak. SML Thank You

DirtyPatrick's Toolshed = Cubist Constructivist Photography / SML Fine Art

No comments:

I had the pleasure of visiting DirtyPatrick's studio (aka Toolshed) last Saturday and found some pretty incredible artwork:

Toolshed / 20071117.10D.46063 / SML (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

DirtyPatrick's real name is Patrick Shawn Bradley (LinkedIn). He was born in Louisiana on December 3, 1966. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a bachelor of architecture in 1993, then moved to New York and became a designer for CNN as a broadcast visual designer for their on-air graphics department.

Ideal Husband / 20071117.10D.46172 / SML (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

He now works full-time at R/GA as a senior visual designer. When he is not busy, he publishes a very popular fashion documentary which showcases the everyday fashion statements from the crazy people at R/GA.

His art can best be described as cubist constructivist photography. Each photograph will only be printed once and are signed and dated by DirtyPatrick himself. They can be printed at any size (maximum size: 5ft x 4ft). Pricing depends on the size of the print. DirtyPatrick is represented by SML Fine Art. If you are interested in his work, please email seeminglee+art@gmail.com.

More of his work can be seen at toolshed.us/catalog and flickr.com/dirtypatrick.

365 Special Days = Celebration of Life and Humanity

No comments:

Fernando Luis Lara is a brazillian artist living and working in the US. He draws the 365 days of the year based on stories submitted by people around the world. Each day will only be drawn once. For $182.50 USD, you get an original drawing (9 x 12 inches = 23 x 31 cm) by mail, and your story and drawing will also be shown on the site. The idea is that over time the site will become a collection of special days around the world, thus serving as a reminder of how special each and every day can be.

It's a genius marketing idea for an artist, and it utilizes the mechanisms of the collaborative theme seen today in the rise of Web 2.0. Very inspiring. Check it out!

When I got my first job out of college in 1999, the first thing I bought was a chess set from Chess Forum. Last year, seven years being at the same job, I bought my second chess set, and this is it: the Fischer set.

At first I am not too crazy about the tops on the bishops. I thought that it might actually make more sense to have the dot be white for the bishops on the white square and a black dot for the bishops on the black square.

However, when I took this photo today from a top-down angle, I suddenly noted the genius design in this set, you can easily tell the bishops from the pawns in this view!

Paul Wirhun / Eggman

No comments:
Source: Paul Wirhun: Art Statement

Paul Wirhun, also known as the Eggman and Rosie Delicious, creates gorgeously painted and crafted sculpture out of eggshells. He has been working with eggshells since he was a little boy through learning the craft of Pysanky from his mother.

Paul believes that eggs are events — not simply objects. In his own words:

[Eggs] are the confluence of primal life forces, sexual energies, that create new life — new beginnings. The shells are memories of these events.

Because eggs possess and symbolize new life, traditional cultures used eggs as talismans, i.e. power objects for magic and ritual. Each egg is a spherical space, a continuously turning pictorial plane around which images distort, challenging common perceptions.

His work has been featured in Time Out NYC Magazine, Rapture Cafe & Books, Craft Magazine as well as the New York Times.

Many of his creations are available for sale on his site:
