Web Trend Map 4 by iA (Information Architects Japan)

No comments:

iA's Web Trend Map 4 arrived in the doorsteps of SML Studio on September 14th, 2009.

Web Trend Map 4 / 2009 / Information Architects Japan (informationarchitects.jp) (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

WHAT IT IS: iA's Web Trend Map plots the leading Internet names onto the Tokyo Metro system. The domains and personalities are carefully selected through dialogue with map enthusiasts. Each domain is evaluated based on traffic, revenue, age, owner and character.

Paying attention to the intersections, we grouped associated websites and ensured every domain is on a line that suits it. As a result, the map produces a web of associations: some provocative, some curious, others ironically accurate.

As a few examples: Twitter is located in Shibuya, the train station with the biggest buzz. Google and its network are placed around Shinjuku, the most highly trafficked station in the world. The New York Times is located in Sugamo, the shopping paradise for Tokyo's grandmothers.

Why Tokyo Metro? Because it works.

The map is HUGE. It's printed on A0 (841 mm × 1189 mm / 33.25 in × 46.75 in) to be exact.

Compared to the 2007 version which was printed on A2 (also see my blog post in 2007), the map has grown more than four times in size.

Here's a shot of the map inside the studio for comparison to see how gigantic it is:

Kudos to iA's excellent packaging designs:

On September 11th, 2009, Smashing Magazine posted of blog post about Data Visualization and Infographics Resources. The map that I created in college intended to help freshmen navigating around New Haven when I was the photo editor / design editor at The Yale Herald back in 1997 was featured:

Within two days, this relatively ancient artifact immediately got a quick boost and the expected long-tail to follow:

Microsoft Live Maps v2 = Google Earth in a Browser

No comments:

http://maps.live.com

Microsoft released Live Maps v2 on 2007-10-16. I meant to blog about it a while back but did not have the time. This release, codename Gemini, has a lot of nifty features, one of which is the ability to view 3d maps inside a browser (a la Google Earth) — and it works for both IE and Firefox, which I assume it should work for Macs as well (but I don't use Macs so let me know).

Microsoft Virtual Earth (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML)

Other cool features include:

  • Party Maps = 1-Click Directions. Display directions to get to a destination from multiple starting points to a single end point. Great for party invites.
  • Route Around Traffic. Replot directions based on traffic.
  • Data Import. Import data in GeoRSS, GPX, KML and mashup with Virtual Earth.
  • Birds Eye views in 3D. Birds Eye view has always been unique in Virtual Earth, and it's even more useful to see it in the 3D context, which superimposes the image taken by real-live camera on top of the perspective 3d view.
  • 3D Tours and Videos of Collections. While Google requires users to throw in 400 bucks a year to get the Google Earth Professional account in order to record a video of tours, you can do it in Virtual Earth for free at 640x480 resolution.
  • 3D Modelling. Microsoft partnered with Dassault to allow user-generated 3D buildings using the 3DVIA Technology. Download 3DVIA Technology preview (PC only)
  • Enhanced Details Page. Business listings show specific data about the business. For example, when search for a data, also list their gender, age, medical school, year of graduation, etc.

Details of the release can be read on Microsoft Virtual Earth / Live Maps' official blog

TinyMap.net = Google Maps + TinyURL

No comments:

I was doing some research on maps mashups recently and I found this little gem called TinyMap.net which can best be described as a marriage of the awesome tools utilized in Google Maps: My Maps and the ingenious everyday Web tool Tiny URL which transforms long URLs into short byte chunks.

SML Flickr: tinymap.net

tinymap.net, originally uploaded by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML.

As according to the official step-by-step tutorial, Tinymap.net allows the user to create maps, trace way-points, mark out points of interests with graphic icons and add notes on the Google map.

Content creation is surprising easy, and I created my custom map in record time, much quicker than using Google's native UI.

One thing I really like about the Tinymap is the ability to create password-protected maps, which allows you to share your map with others without sharing with everyone on the Web. Unless I have mistaken, The My Maps feature on Google Maps can only create private maps that are viewable by one person.

When you save your map, the site returns a short URL for you to send to your friends:

Highly useful. Highly recommended!

Product Space + Wealth of Nations = Visualizing Economics

    2 comments:
Found these amazing maps today which visualize the economics of nations from Albania to Zimbabwe. The maps are available in vector-format (EPS and PDF) showing data in 1985 and 2000:

From the project description on VisualComplexity.com::

The concept of proximity formalizes the intuitive idea that the ability of a country to produce a product depends on its ability to produce other ones. For example, a country with the ability to export apples will probably have most of the conditions suitable to export pears. Unfortunately this intuitive definition of proximity is, very cumbersome to measure. It requires quantifying the overlap between the set of markets related to each product. On the paper "The Product Space Conditions the Development of Nations", published at Science magazine, the authors explain how they've measured proximity by using an outcome based method founded on the assumption that similar products are more likely to be exported in tandem.

The authors generated a network representation of the original proximity matrix to help them develop intuition about its structure as well as to visualize and study the dynamics of countries on it. The matrix representing the product space has many small values which represent weak connections between products. That is why a network representation becomes an adequate way to layout the products, giving the researchers a quick visual way to show the relevant links and to determine where countries are located and where they could be headed.

Another advantage of using a network representation is that we can simultaneously look at the structure of the space and other covariates. In this case, the authors painted the network using the product classifications performed by Edward E. Leamer, and made the size of the nodes proportional to the money moved by that particular industry or World Trade. To give a sense of the proximity of the links involved in our network representation we color coded them by using dark red and blue for strong links; and yellow and light blue for weaker ones.

Web Trend Map 2007 / Information Architects Japan

    3 comments:

I just received the A2 print of the Web Trend Map 2007 by Information Architects Japan. It visualizes the Internet in the form of a subway map and is very well done. You can also view the interactive version on their Web site, which displays a snapshot of that Web site upon rolling over the nodes on the network.

A letter from Oliver Reichenstein (Google / jux2 / LinkedIn) accompanies the shipment and provides additional background on the map:

The first map was conceived in 2006 as a fun Christmas card for our Japanese clients and friend. To our surprise it gained worldwide attention, which encouraged us to release a more meaningful version. It now shows over 250 websites on 16 lines, and people have reportedly spent hours analyzing it. We greatly look forward to hearing your interpretations.

For more information, read their blog post.

TaxiWiz = Know the fare before you go

    No comments:
TaxiWiz is a Google maps mashup that allow users to search for an esitmated cab fare between two locations.

I like the interesting addition of a drop-down list of airports and landmarks aside from the regular street address input.

It is available on the Web as well as mobile editions in seven cities in North America:
