Arn Boezaart, executive director of the Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center in Muskegon, said wind energy may be expensive compared to fossil fuels, but predicted the two will reach parity in about 20 years. He noted increased demand for energy from China and India combined with diminishing resources are sure to drive up the cost of fossil fuels.

"We have genuine competition so the question becomes do we want a slice of this now, or do we wait for someone else to bring it to us when we're ready to buy it?" Boezaart said. "The status quo is not an option. We have to do things differently."
